8 Ways to Protect Your MTN Mobile Money From Theft

Mobile Money has made life easier, faster, and more connected. But with convenience comes the risk of fraud and theft. Protecting your MTN MoMo account is more than just common sense, it’s a daily habit that keeps your hard-earned money safe.

How to Protect Your MTN Mobile Money

1. Keep Your PIN Secret – Always

  • Never share your MoMo PIN with anyone—not even people claiming to be from MTN.

  • Avoid obvious PINs like birth dates or repeated numbers (e.g. 1111, 1234).

  • Change your PIN regularly (every 1-3 months is a good habit).

2. Don’t Fall for Fake Calls or SMS

  • Scammers often call pretending to be MTN staff offering “promotions” or saying there’s an “issue” with your account.

  • MTN will never ask for your PIN or to send money to correct an issue.

  • If you get a suspicious message or call, hang up and call MTN’s verified customer care line directly.

3. Watch Where You Enter Your PIN

  • When using your phone in public, shield your keypad while typing your PIN.

  • Be cautious at MoMo agent points—some fraudsters try to peek or distract you.

4. Lock Your SIM Card

  • Activate SIM card lock on your phone (using a SIM PIN). This prevents someone from removing your SIM and using it in another device.

  • To set it up: Go to Settings > Security > SIM Card Lock (may vary by phone model).

5. Don’t Lend Your Phone Unlocked

  • Avoid giving your phone (unlocked) to strangers or even acquaintances—especially in busy public places.

  • A few seconds is enough for someone to transfer money or screenshot sensitive data.

6. Beware of Fake MoMo Agents

  • Only use verified and trusted MoMo agents.

  • Don’t hand over your phone or allow them to enter your PIN “for you.”

  • Always request a transaction receipt.

7. Enable MTN’s Security Features

  • MTN often offers optional security services like:

    • MoMo PIN Reset prompts with extra verification

    • Transaction alerts via SMS

    • Transaction limits (so you can limit how much can be sent daily)

    • Ask your local MTN office for details and activate any that apply.

8. Report Suspicious Activity Immediately

  • If you think your account has been compromised, dial MTN customer service or visit the nearest service center right away.

  • You can also dial *170# and check your last transactions under the MoMo menu.
