A Good Reason To Be Bad (Part 16)
After Nancy was dropped from the call, Reggie was on the verge of exploding in anger. "How could she be so vile and evil? She wanted this baby so badly, and now that it’s here, she's acting like she wasn't the one who initiated the move. Why is she blaming me?" he ranted to Reuben.
"Calm down, the neighbors can hear you. Don’t you want this plan to remain a secret between the four of us?" Reuben reminded him.
Reggie sighed, not knowing what to do with his anger. For once, he was so mad at his wife that he didn’t want to go home.
“Please, don’t let her know that you already know about this plan of hers. She didn’t realize you were on the line. She’ll never trust me again if she finds out,” Jolene pleaded with him.
Out of frustration, Reggie left Reuben’s place that night, but he didn’t return home. Instead, he went to Esaaba’s place. She was surprised to see him at her door.
"You miss me already?" she asked as she opened the door to let him in.
"Yes, I miss you. But also, Reuben isn’t home, and I didn’t take my keys. Looks like I’ll have to spend the night here."
Esaaba smiled, pleased. "It’s always a pleasure to host you."
They spent a fun night together, watching a movie. Suddenly, Reggie asked, "Don’t you have work tomorrow?"
"You have work tomorrow too," she replied, and with that, they both headed to bed. But early the next morning, Esaaba was hit by severe morning sickness. Too fatigued to get through it alone, they both ended up calling in sick for work. As she sat in the bathroom processing what was happening, Reggie returned from the pharmacy with a few pregnancy tests in hand.
He handed them to her, and she stared at him, confused. "Why are you giving me a pregnancy test?" she asked, bewildered.
Reggie sighed, unable to meet her gaze. "I went to the pharmacy and explained your symptoms, and they gave me this. They also suggested something sweet to help with the morning sickness," he said.
Esaaba couldn’t believe it. "What we did was protected, right? I hope they’re wrong," she said, a hint of worry in her voice.
"I hope so too," Reggie replied, "but if we want accurate results, we should do this test at dawn and get it out of the way. But I’m sure you’re fine. It’s just one of those things."
But it wasn’t “just one of those things.” Early the next morning, Esaaba took the test, and it showed that she was pregnant. Her heart stopped as she tried to catch her breath. How could this be happening? Hadn’t they been cautious enough? She burst into tears, thinking about how disappointed her mother would be when she found out.
She emerged from the bathroom, crying. "I’m pregnant! How could this happen?" she exclaimed, throwing the test at him as tears streamed down her face.
Reggie pretended to be shocked, but inside, he was leaping for joy. Yes! The first part of the plan had finally been achieved.
