A Good Reason To Be Bad (Part 18)

“Marry me, Reggie,” Esaaba said firmly.

“But Esaaba, we just met. Isn’t it too soon to get married?” he replied.

She rolled her eyes, thinking his response was ridiculous. “Too soon? I’m carrying your child! Doesn’t that make it urgent?”

Reggie hesitated. “We didn’t plan this, but marriage is a huge commitment.”

“Having a child is an even bigger one,” she shot back.

Sighing, Reggie realized her resolve wasn’t going to soften. “Could you be patient? Maybe we could marry after the baby’s born?”

“No,” Esaaba insisted. “I want a ring before I go through this pregnancy.”

Realizing the ring was the sticking point, Reggie decided to go along with it, so he accompanied her to her family and formally asked for her hand. They provided him with a list of traditional dowry requirements, which he dutifully fulfilled. But as the traditional ceremony drew closer, he knew he needed family support—a task complicated by Nancy’s mother’s likely reluctance to uphold the ruse.

He decided to seek Nancy’s help, explaining the situation. “Esaaba’s pushing for a traditional marriage. Should I go through with it just until the baby’s born?”

Nancy sighed, she didn't want to help but it was for the good of both of them so she replied, “It’s a smart idea. I’ll join you.”

With Nancy’s support, they visited Esaaba’s mother. Nancy introduced herself as Reggie’s sister and spoke persuasively, “My brother is ready to marry your daughter, but we’d like to wait until after the baby’s birth so we can have a proper ceremony, we don't want to rush the process. For now, we’re offering this dowry as a gesture.”

Esaaba was delighted, especially when Reggie gave her a ring, she accepted the promise ring Reggie offered, her mother looking on with approval. As she reveled in the moment, Nancy and Reggie exchanged sinister glances - These were the little sacrifices they could make as a couple if they wanted to hold a child in their arms.
