A Good Reason To Be Bad (Part 5)
After Nancy’s latest attempt to convince Reggie to go along with her plan failed, she was furious. She couldn't believe how stubborn he was being, and it ticked her off more than ever. But Nancy wasn’t one to give up easily. If he didn’t like Akos, then she would find someone else, someone who suited his preferences better. She sighed deeply, went back into the room where Akos was sitting, and sat beside her on the bed.
“Akos, I’m sorry,” Nancy began, her voice tinged with frustration. “But my husband has refused. He won’t make you pregnant, no matter how much I tried to persuade him. I don’t know what his problem is.”
Akos, though disappointed, wasn’t surprised. She was more concerned about how this would affect her financial situation. “So what now?” she asked, keeping her tone neutral.
Nancy sighed again and looked her in the eye. “I’ll compensate you. I’ll give you GH₵500 for your time and the trouble. You can use it for something, maybe start a small business or buy some oranges to sell.”
Akos quickly agreed, happy to take whatever she could. The money, while less than she had hoped for, would go a long way toward helping her stay afloat. With that resolved, she left without much complaint, but Nancy was already onto her next plan.
Reggie’s rejection didn’t stop Nancy; it only made her more determined. "If he doesn’t like Akos," she thought to herself, "then I’ll find someone else. Someone perfect." She knew her husband well enough to understand what kind of woman might appeal to him.
Nancy made a few calls to her trusted hairstylist, Adwoa, to see if she could find a candidate who fit the bill. A week later, Nancy had found someone she thought would be perfect—minimalist, beautiful, and without any apparent drama. Her name was Kate, and she seemed like the right fit for Nancy's increasingly secretive plan.
On a quiet Saturday morning, Nancy woke up early and made her way to the salon, determined to keep this new business as discreet as possible. She didn’t want anyone to know what she was up to, especially after the disaster with Akos.
When she finally met Kate, she was pleased. Kate was just the type she had envisioned—simple yet attractive, with a calm demeanor. Nancy sat down with her and shook her hand.
“Hello, Kate. I’ve heard a lot about you from Adwoa,” Nancy said with a smile.
“Nice meeting you,” Kate responded. “Adwoa said you’ll take care of my accommodation and food till I give birth.”
“Yes, that’s the plan—assuming my client accepts you,” Nancy replied, still wary after what had happened with Akos.
Kate, eager to impress, leaned forward. “How do I make myself acceptable to this client? What do I need to do?”
Nancy sighed. "Do you have your STI report ready?"
“Yes, I do,” Kate answered confidently.
“How many children do you have?” Nancy asked.
“I have a son,” Kate replied, pulling out her phone to show Nancy a picture of her lively little boy.
Nancy smiled as she glanced at the photo. “He’s beautiful. Does he have any health conditions?”
“No, he’s perfectly fine. The only illness that runs in our family is asthma, but even that is mild. My son doesn’t have it, and it’s really only affected some of my cousins.”
Nancy was pleased. "Good, we’ll go meet the client tonight," she said.
Later that afternoon, when Reggie came home, Nancy didn't say a word about the new candidate she had lined up. He kissed her and headed for the bathroom. Wrapped in a towel afterward, he made his way toward their bedroom, but stopped dead in his tracks when he saw Kate sitting calmly on the bed. For a moment, he was confused, but it didn’t take long for him to figure out what had happened.
His face darkened, and without saying a word, he turned and stormed into the kitchen where Nancy was. The look in his eyes was filled with anger and frustration.
“Nancy, what the hell is this?” Reggie spat, his voice low but seething with rage. “If I go out there and sleep with someone, you’ll say I was unfaithful. But here you are, pushing women on me. Am I some kind of kid for you to be deciding things like this for me?”
Nancy stood her ground, her frustration bubbling to the surface. “We have a problem, and I’m trying to solve it! If I leave it to you, we’ll always be stuck in the same place!”
Reggie clenched his jaw, barely able to control his anger. “Where do you even know these people from? Why do you keep bringing them into our home?!”
“You don’t have to know them, Reggie,” Nancy snapped. “You just need to get it up and make them pregnant!”
Reggie slammed his hand down on the counter. “Nothing is getting up with people I don’t know!” he shouted, his patience finally snapping.
Nancy’s eyes welled up with tears, her voice breaking. “Why? Why can’t you just do this one thing for me? I ask for nothing else but to be a mother, and all you do is say no.”
Reggie’s anger began to ebb as he saw her distress, but he still stood his ground. He reached out and gently wiped away her tears, offering her a small, apologetic smile. “Nancy,” he said softly, “I know how much you want this. I do. But I can’t do it this way.”
She looked up at him, her confusion mixing with frustration. “Then what am I supposed to do?” she asked.
Reggie took a deep breath, pulling her into a comforting embrace. “You want to be a mother, right?”
Nancy nodded, her face still buried in his chest.
“Then let’s do it together,” he said. “Let’s go with my plan.”
She pulled back slightly, her face a mix of curiosity and skepticism. “What plan?”
“We can explore fertility treatments, adoption, or surrogacy—whatever it takes. But we do it together, as a team, without all this secrecy and strangers coming into our lives.”
Nancy blinked, processing his words. She felt a sense of relief wash over her. For the first time in a long time, she felt like they were on the same page. “Okay,” she whispered. “Let’s do it your way.”
Reggie smiled and kissed her forehead. “Good," he muttered, but nothing was good, the drama was just getting started.
