How My Marriage Almost Ended on Valentine's Day

My wife was pregnant, and she didn't like going out with her baby bump. It was always work and home; she wouldn't even take pictures because of her bump. She was convinced she looked hideous, and no matter how many times I told her she was beautiful, she wouldn't believe me.

Valentine's Day was approaching, and I wanted to take her out, but she outrightly rejected the offer, so I decided to surprise her with a home dinner. I looked online and found a food vendor who also did home décor. It was very nice and intimate, so I phoned them up and quickly planned something over the phone with customer service.

The day arrived, and when the decorator came, to my surprise, it was my ex.

"Mimi, how come I didn't know it was you?" I exclaimed when I saw her.

"I knew it was you. At least I haven't forgotten you," she replied.

We were quiet for a while, and then she said, "So where do I start working?"

I quietly showed her the living room, and she gathered her tools and started working.

"You never did this for me when we were together," she suddenly remarked.

"I... I was a broke young man."

"But you told me you don’t celebrate Valentine’s Day," she responded.

"It was my ego; I couldn't admit that I didn’t have money."

"You just didn't care about me. If a man cares about you, he will care about how he makes you feel. You didn’t even know it was me on the phone; that’s how irrelevant I was to you," she said.

Her words made me feel so guilty as I watched her beautify the place. I couldn't help but feel sorry for the way I treated her.

"Do you like it?" she asked, turning around.

I hugged her tightly. "I'm sorry," I whispered.

She hugged me back. "I miss you too," she replied, holding me even tighter.

It was at that moment that my wife decided to come home. It didn’t look good.

She said she had left me some documents and had been calling me, but I wasn’t answering. What she saw didn’t look good at all. I explained, and Mimi helped me explain, but she was still mad at me.

That Valentine's night was a disaster; she almost left me.

But now, she and Mimi are friends. Mimi was even at the christening of our baby.

That Valentine’s was a disaster, but we’ve all healed now.
