The Crazy Things I Have Done For Love #1
We finished high school together, but my grades kept me from college that year. Eric went ahead, but he was always broke, so I'd steal money from my mother to buy him groceries and give him pocket money. I knew I was risking a lot, but to me, it was love, and he was my world.
One time, I needed to pay to retake my failed papers, but Eric needed money for his tuition. I gave him the cash and told my parents the money had been stolen. My mom was furious, she beat the daylight out of me and sent me to live with my aunt in Koforidua. Because of this, I rarely saw Eric, but it didn’t matter to him—he forgot the stolen money, groceries, and meals.
Eventually, he cheated and broke up with me. But I didn’t cry for long; soon enough, I found another guy, Selorm, who had a job, which meant I didn’t need to steal for him. When I entered university, Selorm drove me there, and gave me pocket money, and I couldn’t have been happier. I visited every weekend, washed his clothes, cooked, and even cleaned his house. To me, it was almost like we were married.
Then one of his neighbors called me, “Kabuki, there’s a woman Selorm keeps bringing home. I wouldn’t have said anything, but it’s getting out of hand. You’ll cook and clean; she’ll come to eat and mess everything up.” I thanked her but didn’t act on it. One night, Selorm said he wasn’t feeling well and would sleep early. After group studies, I rushed over to check on him. It was 10:30 when I left campus, and by 11:10, I was knocking at his door. I saw his car and heard his phone ringing inside, so I knew he was there. Worried, I started crying and calling out his name.
His irritated neighbor opened his door and said, “He brought a lady home. That’s why he isn’t answering. Just go home and come back when it’s your turn.” I got angry and started banging on Selorm’s door. He finally opened, pretending to have been asleep, and asked, “Kabuki, why are you here this late? Let me take you back to campus.” I ignored him and hurried inside, finding the other woman waiting. Furious, I tried to confront her, but Selorm pulled me away, drove me back to campus, and begged me to forget it. I blocked him and moved on with my life.
Now, I’m with a new man, a sweet guy, starting a business. I even took a loan to help him out. Yes, I never learn, I know. If he breaks my heart, I will still find another one. Until my last breath, I will never stop loving in a way that makes me seem crazy.
