The Crazy Things I Have Done For Love #5
Kobby was a good guy when we started dating—two broke students in university with nothing but love for each other. What made loving Kobby easy was that he only had eyes for me. If he was doing something behind my back, he respected me enough to never let me find out.
It was like that until a coursemate approached him, asking for help with some topics she was struggling with. He started spending more time with her than with me, but I didn’t complain. I trusted him, so I didn’t say much. But soon, Kobby started becoming distant; he looked distraught, and he wasn’t even talking to that girl anymore. I wanted to know what had happened, but getting him to open up was a struggle.
One day, he broke down and said, “I’m in trouble.”
“What trouble?” I asked.
"Franca introduced me to her friend from high school, and we became friends, but things went too far along the way... and I got her pregnant."
I shook with fear. What were we going to do now? He begged me to forgive him, but that wasn’t even the worst part. The girl was threatening him. “Give me money so I can take care of it, or I’ll report you to my parents—and you’ll go to jail.” That was the threat she was giving him. I felt sorry for him, but I was also furious.
"Why did you sleep with someone in high school?" I snapped.
He said he didn’t even know how it happened. “I didn’t even like her,” he said. She was demanding 5,000, which was way more than we, as broke students, could afford. I took her number to try begging her, and I even asked Franca, the coursemate, to speak to her. But surprisingly, Franca was on her side.

That’s when I realized this might be a plan by both of them to extort money from us. But since the girl was in high school, Kobby could be in serious trouble; I didn't want to lose my man, so we both started trying to raise the money. Unfortunately, we couldn’t get that amount from anyone, so I did the unthinkable. I sold my tabletop fridge and some of my belongings. It still wasn’t enough, so one day, when my roommate wasn’t around, I went into her things and stole her money to make up the difference.
I felt horrible as my roommate later screamed and cursed whoever had taken her money. I was afraid it would come back to haunt me. It took me months to make the money back and replace what I’d taken.
Today, Kobby and I are no longer together. He pretty much ended things after he got me to help pay his debt. I don’t think I would go that far for another man again... but who knows? Love isn’t always rational.
