They Say Nobody Marries Their Enemy But...

Growing up, we all heard the phrase—nobody marries their enemy. But now, I am convinced that isn’t true.

When I met Joe, he was everything a woman could ask for—kind, loving, always ready to help, even strangers, just because that’s the kind of person he was. I ignored his flaws because, really, who doesn’t have them? But now, three years into marriage, I feel like he hates me.

We don’t go out anymore. And when I ask when we will, he scoffs, as if the idea is absurd. He doesn’t hesitate to compliment other women, even when I’m standing right there. He’s playful with them—too playful—and he doesn’t care who’s watching, not even me.

I cook, and he eats everything, but not without a critique:

"The rice is too hard." "There’s not enough salt." "There’s not enough pepper."

Yet, he’ll eat the same meal somewhere else—sometimes even worse—and suddenly, it’s "the best food he’s ever had."

Recently, he joined a hiking group that climbs mountains and hills on Saturdays. They go with their partners. But not my husband—he goes with other women.

"What’s wrong with me, Joe? Why won’t you go with me?" I asked him one day.

After enough complaints, he finally took me along. But the entire time, he avoided me. It was the other men and their partners who kept me company. Joe treated me like a stranger, and everyone could see it. After that, I took the hint and stayed out of his way.

In public, I barely speak to him anymore. You never know when he’ll flare up and yell, so I avoid him. Recently, I had an issue with his sisters. He didn’t even hesitate to jump to their defense, standing beside them as they all ganged up against me.

Whoever said we don’t marry our enemies never met my husband. He found his finest enemy, put a ring on her finger, and that girl is me. If I’m ever in trouble, I know he won’t defend me. He is my biggest enemy, my tormentor, the one who reminds me every single day that he did me a favor by marrying me.
